Our lands and operations

TimberWest has 325,400 hectares of private forest land on Vancouver Island. The Company also owns renewable Crown harvest rights to 700,000m3 per year. Our timberland management includes sustainable forest management practices, carbon reduction initiatives, timber inventory, strategic silviculture investments, harvest planning and the marketing and sales of timber products. All of our lands are third party certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

We work with over 100 local contractors and provide thousands of direct and indirect jobs annually in Coastal BC communities.

Safety

TimberWest and our contractors collectively strive towards the goal of zero harm and zero injuries by educating staff and contractors that:

  • All injuries are preventable
  • Safety and success go hand in hand.
  • Safety is everyone’s shared responsibility.
  • Open communication is key for the safety of everyone.
  • We accept responsibility for our actions and how they affect others.
  • We grow our safety leaders and champions from within.
  • We foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement with a focus on prevention of injury.

SAFE Company Certification

TimberWest is a strong advocate of the SAFE Certification program. We have been an active participant, and certified member, since the start of the program in 2007. We work in collaboration with all of our contractors to ensure they also achieve SAFE Certification.

As part of the SAFE Certification, TimberWest senior management and staff at all levels are committed to actively participating in our Health & Safety programs that provide the necessary elements to minimize risk, through training and education, and communicating regulatory and industry requirements.

The SAFE Companies program of the BC Forest Safety Council is intended to ensure that forest industry companies take specific and concrete measures to make safety an over-riding priority in their operations. In order to achieve SAFE Company certification, organizations must undergo a comprehensive external audit of their Health & Safety programs and processes every three years, supplemented by annual internal audits.

SAFE Company audits measure performance in the following areas:

  1. Management Leadership
  2. Hazard & Risk Assessment
  3. Standards, Procedures & Work Instructions
  4. Training, Education & Certification
  5. Health & Safety Communications Systems
  6. Incident Reporting and Investigation Systems
  7. Contractor Management
  8. Prime Contractor Selection & Management
