Our Environmental Vision Statement
TimberWest seeks to earn an international reputation as an environmentally responsible supplier of forest products through stewardship of its lands. This includes the pursuit of sustainable forestry that balances environmental, social and economic values.
To meet this goal we will:
- Employ practices that comply with regulatory environmental standards.
- Manage operations to the standards set out under ISO 14001, Environmental Management System certification.
- Prevent pollution and promote responsible recycling, waste reduction, and safe disposal of hazardous materials.
- Provide employees with environmental management training opportunities.
- Promote individual responsibility for environmental management.
- Continuously improve our performance.
- Secure Sustainable Forest Management Certification under widely recognized systems as measured through third party performance audits.
- Implement and maintain a certified chain of custody program for our timberlands, log marketing and sales. This program will conform to the requirements of PEFC Annex 4.
- Ensure that environmental management is cost effective.
Our Environmental Policy
TimberWest is committed to sustainable forest management and will conduct its activities in a manner that maintains fully functioning ecosystems and economic operations.
- Employees and contractors are required to act in support of this policy and will comply with all applicable laws governing environmental performance.
- Managers will ensure that effective systems are in place to meet regulatory requirements and company policies, procedures and other commitments.
- Planners will work with government and other appropriate parties to identify key public environmental values and will employ best management practices for the protection of such values.
- Forest management activities will be conducted in a manner that protects biological diversity, forest productivity and the key environmental values of water quality, fish habitat, soil productivity and critical wildlife habitat.
- Environmental protection will be a planning priority and activities will be sensitive to local conditions, needs and values.
- Forestry operations will be managed with the objective of sustaining economically viable operations.
- Forest workers will immediately cease activities that appear to be contrary to this policy and will report such events to Company and government authorities.
- TimberWest will work with appropriate agency personnel to ensure that needed remedial or mitigation measures are designed and implemented.
- Independent audits of plans and field performance will assess effectiveness in meeting environmental protection objectives and to support continual improvement.
- Periodic performance reports will be made available to the public.
