In July, the BC Chief Foresters’ Leadership Team consisting of Chief Foresters from across the province gathered in Campbell River to discuss the future of forestry in BC. They exchanged best practices on innovation technologies, sustainable forest management, and partnership engagement with local communities.
Diane Nicholls, British Columbia’s Chief Forester, hosted this meeting with the intent of convening future meetings in different regions of the province to gain a better understanding of the regional perspectives of forestry.
“Forestry is the bedrock of BC,” says Nicholls. “For generation’s forestry has defined this province, and although the industry hit a rough patch, it is re-bounding, and doing so because of technological innovation; a global appreciation for the fibre we produce; and a healthy respect for the science behind our harvesting and replanting practices. BC is a world leader in sustainable forestry, and we have much to be proud of.”
“Gatherings like this, and the communications pathways they open, are the necessary ingredient for foresters to share technical knowledge amongst themselves while calibrating their perception with residents in their operating areas,” says Domenico Iannidinardo, TimberWest’s VP Sustainability and Chief Forester, “I am inspired by this meeting and excited that it will become a tradition for this team to meet regularly with First Nations, local governments and other stakeholders.”
BC’s forest industry remains resilient, and committed to the hundreds of local communities who depend upon the sector. The meeting included several Mayors from across the mid and north Island, who were able to provide insights and suggestions to the Chief Foresters about how to involve and better engage communities in forest management processes. Overall, there was optimism about the state of the industry, and agreement was made to bring First Nations, communities and stakeholders to the table to learn, and discuss, best practices and approaches to keep the sector sustainable, competitive and future focused.
The BC Chief Foresters’ Leadership Team recently toured around Campbell River and Discovery Islands while also meeting with local mayors. The team is led by the BC Chief Forester, Diane Nicholls, and includes eight Chief Foresters of the major forest companies across the province, including TimberWest’s own Domenico Lannidinardo.
